Common Injuries Due to Car Accidents

Car accidents can result in a variety of serious injuries that can change a person’s life and result in a variety of unexpected conditions. Based on the exact nature of a person’s injuries, victims can end up facing a range of financial challenges including lost wages and medical expenses.

To help motor vehicle drivers better understand the various risks that exist on the road, this article will review some of the most common injuries faced by people who are involved in motor vehicle accidents.

Broken Bones

Rarely life threatening in nature, broken bones can still cause serious pain as well as large medical bills. Many times, broken bones take several months to completely heal and can even require victim obtain physical therapy to fully heal.

Extremity Injuries

A large number of motor vehicle accidents result in a person’s limbs being injured. The reason these injuries is so common is that a person’s feet and legs are positioned in vulnerable locations in a vehicle. In the most serious high-speed accidents, amputations are even known to occur. These injuries often result in lost wages because workers are unable to perform the duties associated with their job.

Herniated Discs

Herniated discs are one of the most common injuries incurred by people who are involved in a car accident. These injuries arise because the significant force of motor vehicle accidents results in a person’s vertebrae separating and moving out of place. If you experience a sharp pain in either your back or legs, it is important to immediately speak with a physician.

Internal Injuries

There injuries often do not appear immediately after an accident. Some examples of these injuries include damage to organs, punctured lungs, and ruptured spleens. People who experience these injuries should not hesitate to receive medical attention or there is a substantial risk that the person’s condition might grow much worse.

Spinal Cord Damage

These injuries are some of the most devastating conditions that a person can face. If a person’s spinal cord is either permanently damaged or severed, a person faces either paralysis or death. The medical bills resulting from these injuries are often very significant because patients must undergo vigorous rehabilitation.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Motor vehicle accidents are one of the most common causes of brain trauma. Even accidents that occur at low speed can result in people experiencing major head injuries. Most often, these accidents occur because drivers or vehicle passengers strike their head against a vehicle’s dashboard or wheel. It is critical that a person who experiences a head injury does not hesitate to obtain prompt medical attention.

Whiplash

These neck injuries occur when a person’s head and neck are violently jerked forward and back as the result of an accident. Whiplash results in pain that radiates from a person’s arms and shoulders. While whiplash can appear immediately after an accident, sometimes the injury does not become apparent until hours or days after a surgery. Whiplash often lasts for months and sometimes even years, which can prove to be very difficult in resuming to how one’s life was before the accident.

Limit Raised in Maryland for Civil Jury Trial Demand

In November 2010, Maryland voters choose to raise the maximum amount in a civil trial from $10,000 to $15,000 for a either party to demand a jury trial.

Starting December 1, 2010, a jury trial demand is not allowed for civil matters where the damages are $15,000.00 or less.  Thus the parties will not have the option to transfer the case to the Circuit Court.
